Transfer Credit

Credits earned at other accredited graduate institutions with a grade of C (or pass in pass/fail system) or above may be considered for transfer in the M.A. and M.Div. programs to Luther Seminary upon evaluation by the registrar and in consultation with the academic dean, division chair and faculty point people.

Luther Seminary will accept a maximum of one half of the Master of Arts degree and Master of Divinity degree program requirements through transfer credits that have been completed within ten years prior to matriculation at Luther Seminary. Transfer credits are accepted from the following types of schools: 

  1. All regionally accredited institutions

  2. All ATS (Association of Theological Schools) accredited institutions

  3. International institutions whose accreditation is equivalent to those noted above

MA Degrees: 7 Course maximum

MDiv Degree: 12 Course maximum

Transfer credit will not be granted toward certificate programs.


Credit Duration

All course credits applied toward all degree program requirements should be earned within ten years of the awarding of the degree.


Second First Degrees

Students who have completed a first master’s degree at Luther Seminary or another accredited graduate school or seminary and are seeking a second master’s degree from Luther Seminary are eligible to use credits from the first degree toward the completion of the second degree as long as they are less than 10 years old and have a grade of C/P or better. 

If the first earned degree is from Luther Seminary: The first earned degree may be surrendered and all credits earned within the ten year window with a grade of C/P or better can be used toward the second degree.

OR

The first degree may be retained and Students can apply up to 50% of the credits from the first degree to the second, provided they are within the ten year window, and have a grade of C/P or better. The student must complete at least 50 percent of the requirements for the second degree through new courses.

If the first degree is from another institution: The students retain their first degree.  Students can apply up to 50% of the credits from the first degree to the second provided they are within the ten year window, and have a grade of C/P or better. The Registrar will review the transcript from the first degree and make any determinations regarding transfer work. The student must complete at least 50 percent of the requirements for the second degree through new courses.
